Using manual solutions, Adobe Photoshop PSD files can be recovered however this will consume extra time and effort. Follow the given methods to recover corrupted PSD files.
Method 1. Using previous versions of files
Only a few people are aware of Windows backup systems that help users to restore previous versions of file. These previous versions are copies of files and folders created by the Windows backup system. You can save these files at any desired location and restore it to the previous version.
Before using this method, open Adobe Photoshop and check whether the file is corrupt. If Adobe Photoshop failed to read the damaged file, then use the given steps:
- Right-click on the corrupt or damaged PSD file and choose the option ‘Restore previous versions’
- Find an earlier version of the corrupt PSD. Then, choose the ‘Restore’ button.
- Run Photoshop and open the restored PSD file. Hit OK when you get a message to warn that some text layers having fonts are missing.
- Check all layers and remark the lost part and save them as a new PSD file.
Note:Adobe Photoshop installation is necessary to use this method. Moreover, technical expertise is a must to understand it.
Method 2. Recover damaged PSD files from .temp files
While working on Photoshop, the PS application uses .temp files to save the work progress. The best thing about these files is if the TEMP folder exists on your computer, then in case of a Photoshop crash, then PSD files still exist on your system.
In other words, .temp files work as a backup from where you can restore PSD files. To find your PSD files, follow these steps:
- Open ‘This PC’ and then double-click on C drive where all apps exist.
- Double-click on Users and hit the appropriate username
- Open the AppData folder and pick the local folder to search the temp folder
- Open the temp folder to locate the files which are named Photoshop temp files with a random number at the end.
- Open each of the files using Photoshop.
- Now, rename the files to recover them.
Note:You can only use this method when you have Photoshop installed on your system.
Apart from these two methods, you can use online tools and upload corrupt PSD files online to recover their data.
