What is MBOX?
MBOX is a common file extension, holding a collection of electronic mail messages. It efficiently stores and organizes email-messages. The file extension stands for MailBox.
MBOX is used for official purpose. It is used typically on Unixplatform for multitask and multi-user support. These days, other file extensions are replacing MBOX on Mac platform such as EMLX.
Please Note– MBOX format doesn’t support the folders storing. Instead, messages for every folder are stored in a separate MBOX file.
MBOX is used by many email clients including Thunderbird, Eudora, Apple Mail, Mulberry, Spicebird, Netscape, Evolution, Mozilla Mail and Entourage to organize and communicate.
A *.mbox file is a plain text that stores the email as 7-bit ASCII text and the rest materials like attachments in encoded format. All the mail messages are stored in a single plain text and the beginning of each message contains “From” that let users about different messages.
Variation of MBOX
It is known as MBOX family. There are four population variation of the file extension including mboxo, mboxrd, mboxcl and mboxcl2.
Mboxrd supports Netscape, Thunderbird and Mozilla email clients.
Default location :
/User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ directory
Though, the location may differ from client to client.
Outlookdoesn’t support MBOX. It requires conversion to view MBOX on Outlook. The Migration task is accomplished with the help of migration programs like MBOX to PST………
